The Making
Behind every piece is a story of craft and creation
From Concept to Creation
The journey each piece takes
Inspiration & Concept
Every piece begins with an idea — sometimes from a walk through the Australian bush, sometimes from the grain of a piece of timber, or the way light falls through coloured glass.
Material Selection
Choosing the right materials is crucial. Whether it's selecting the perfect canvas, sourcing sustainably harvested timber, or finding glass with just the right properties, this stage sets the foundation.
Creation
This is where the magic happens. Hours, days, sometimes weeks of careful work, always in conversation with the material, letting it guide the final form.
Refinement
The final stages involve careful refinement — ensuring every detail serves the whole, every surface is finished to perfection, every element tells its part of the story.
Techniques by Medium
Each material demands its own approach
Painting
My painting process typically begins with plein air sketches or photographs, capturing the light and mood of the Australian landscape. Back in the studio, I work in layers, building up depth and texture over time.
I primarily work in oils, appreciating their long working time and rich, luminous quality. Each painting evolves through multiple sessions, allowing me to refine and adjust until the work feels complete.
Woodworking
Working with wood requires patience and respect for the material. I source much of my timber locally, often from trees that have fallen naturally or been salvaged from demolition sites.
Each piece of wood tells its own story through its grain, colour, and character. My job is to listen to what it wants to become and guide it there through careful shaping and finishing.
Metalworking
Metal offers a different kind of conversation. It's more immediate, more physical. The forge, the hammer, the heat — there's a primal quality to metalworking that I find deeply satisfying.
I work primarily with steel and copper, creating both functional pieces and pure sculpture. The patinas that develop over time become part of the work itself.
Stained Glass
Stained glass is perhaps the most magical of my mediums. It transforms light itself into colour and mood, changing throughout the day as the sun moves across the sky.
I use traditional lead came and copper foil techniques, combined with contemporary designs that honour the craft's rich history while speaking to modern sensibilities.
